England Manager Gareth Southgate Admits That His Team Is Struggling In Midfield And That They Have Not Found A Replacement For Kalvin Phillips

England midfield woe: Southgate laments absence of natural Phillips replacement

England manager Gareth Southgate admits that his team is struggling in midfield and that they have not found a replacement for Kalvin Phillips.

England were fortunate to draw 1-1 against Scotland in their Euro 2024 opener, with Harry Kane's goal canceling out a John McGinn strike.

Southgate said after the game that he was disappointed with his team's performance in midfield, and that they were "not flowing" as he would have liked. He also admitted that they have not found a natural replacement for Phillips, who is currently out with a long-term injury.

"We're still looking for that natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips," Southgate said. "He's a unique player, and we don't have anyone else quite like him in the squad."

"We've tried a few different players in midfield, but we're still not getting the balance right. We're not creating enough chances, and we're not defending well enough as a unit."

Southgate will have to find a solution to his midfield problems quickly, as England face a tough match against Germany in their next game. The Three Lions will need to win that game if they want to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.
